Creating a Group of Advisors

Open Source Matters (OSM), is the non-profit organization that provides the Joomla project with financial and legal support.

It's a serious responsibility and one that is currently held by 14 board members who have long and successful track records as participants in the Joomla community.
We are always looking to improve and follow best practices for organizations like OSM. We recognize that the board would benefit from a widened scope of experience with other Open Source and non-profit projects.

To this end, we’re planning to create a group of advisors. The aim of this group is to provide:
  • Advice based on their experience and success in the Open Source and business world.
  • Connections to people who can help the Joomla project.
  • A fresh, outsider's view on Joomla and its challenges.

However, we do want to make sure that the group is set up correctly. To that end, we approached two people with substantial experience at the highest levels of the Open Source world: Allen Gunn from Asipration Tech and Dan Lopez from the Linux Foundation. We have asked them, together with OSM, the Joomla leadership and the Joomla community to help create and define the structure for the group so that future members can be successfully brought on board.

Nothing is set in stone regarding this group, from the name to the members to the structure. Over the next few weeks, look for ways in which you can talk with the advisors, help form the group's structure and benefit from their advice.

Flex 4 Latest Updastes For TLF2.0

TLF 2.0 is not a drop-in replacement into Flex 4. To even get it running changes are needed to Flex 4.0.T wo files need to be replaced in Flex 4 and spark.swc needs to be rebuilt.  The files, FTETextField.as and CSSTextLayoutFormat.as, are available for download here.

These changes were tested with Flex 4.0 SDK build 14159. I believe the same changes will work with Flex 4.1.
To rebuild Flex with these changes:
1) From http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/display/flexsdk/Download+Flex+4 download the “Open Source Flex SDK” you wish to modify.
2) replace the two files with the above modified versions.
3) run “ant -q main” in the frameworks directory
4) replace spark.swc with the one you just built.

There are other known issues. The biggest one is that TLF changed selection to permit inclusion of the final paragraph terminator in the selection from the selectAll API. This gives more consistent highlighting but caused some problems for Flex code. Fixes for this issue are not available for 4.0/4.1.

UPDATE For Flex 4.1
The changes for Flex 4.1 are to the same two files but the source files have changed in the Flex SDK.  I posted 4.1 versions here:  http://blogs.adobe.com/tlf/files/2010/08/FlexFixes41.zip

I’ve also seen the problem with building datavisualization.  I solved by copying manifest_datavisualization.xml to manifest.xml in the frameworks/projects/datavisualization directory.

High Court of Australia Uses Joomla

The High Court of Australia is the most important court in Australia. Based in Canberra, it is the country's supreme court and final court of appeal.

They have just relaunched their website using Joomla: http://www.hcourt.gov.au. As with some other high-profile Joomla sites we've featured here recently, this design reaches very high standards of accessibility.

Open Source Matters(OSM) Financial Update

One of the primary roles of Open Source Matters (OSM) is to manage financial matters for the Joomla! project. It is our role to make sure that the project is financially secure and able to support the Joomla! community. Here is a high level breakdown of OSM's current finances compared to last year, along with some thoughts on what this all means to you as a member of the Joomla! community.

What Does The Future Hold?
These year-to-year comparisons indicate that the future looks bright for the Joomla! project’s  finances.

1) The experiment of OSM hiring paid consultants to do development work for the Joomla! project has ended for now. That means one of our largest expenses will not be on the books in future months.

2) The project's legal expenses have been significantly reduced. While still protecting the Joomla! trademark, our legal expenses for this year are a 58% decrease compared to the same period last year:

2009 year to date legal invoices:  $148,920
2010 year to date legal invoices:  $62,603

Over the last six full months of 2010 (June through November), there were only $15,211 in invoiced legal expenses, which means this trend of reduced legal expenses is continuing.

3) We have multiple  new income streams coming online such as the Joomla! Press (http://www.joomla.org/announcements/general-news/5298-joomla-press-titles-from-pearson.html), the Joomla! demo site (http://demo.joomla.org), as well as the ability to collect donations. We also have plans to improve and expand the offerings in the Joomla shop (http://shop.joomla.org/), and we are also looking at other ways to bring in more income from different areas of the joomla.org family of websites.

4) We are building a genuine Capital Committee that is dedicated to raising money for the Joomla! project. You can find out more and join in here:

http://community.joomla.org/blogs/community/1322-new-sponsorship-team.html

What Does This All Mean For You?
It means two things above all:

1) The project is on a path to stronger financial stability. Joomla!’s future is more secure because we have a growing financial safety net should it ever be needed.
2) We have more resources to support the community. Earlier this year, we had some cash flow challenges which led to us having to suspend our support of some Joomla! Days. We are now in a position to end that suspension. If you are running a Joomla! event or if you want to plan one, please send an email to eventsteam@opensourcematters.org and we'll do our very best to help you out.

How You Can Help
Here are some ideas on how you can contribute to the Joomla! project by helping to strengthen our finances:

1) Join the Capital Committee: http://community.joomla.org/blogs/community/1322-new-sponsorship-team.html
2) Sponsor Joomla!: http://opensourcematters.org/support-joomla.html
3) Point Joomla! users to the demo site and the Joomla! Press books when they're published.
4) Go and enjoy Joomla!. After all, that's why we're all here and working hard together in order to secure Joomla!'s future.

Joomla Extensions Directory Enhanced Approval Process

The Joomla! Extensions Directory Team is proud to announce a new enhanced listing submission approval process.  Over the last two years, submissions to the JED have increased exponentially and it is expected to continue to grow throughout 2011 and far beyond.  The JED now serves over 6000 extensions to the community and is expected to reach nearly 7000 within the next 6 weeks.  To help facilitate this growth, the submission approval process has been enhanced.  This is the first round of enhancements that will be coming out this month and the team is very excited about the new features - we hope you will be too!

Here are the enhancements:

  • Submission Errors Now Display In the Pending Listing Screen
  • Editors can place comments directly in the Error display
  • The date of submission now shows (Approval time is set for 21 days)
  • A reorganized submission page
  • Information about the listing fields directly on the Pending Screen/Add Listing Page

So What Does It Mean?

  • If you currently have a pending listing, you can check to see what errors you need to fix to get your listing approved without the need to wait for an email from the JED Team.
  • You will no longer recieve emails from the team to inform you of errors.
  • The JED Team will be able to process entries with greater speed.

So What's the Catch?

  • There is no catch - the team has implemented this to improve the Developer Experience and to decrease the team workload while providing more listings more expediently to the end users.
  • One thing to note, when you go to your pending listing, if you have not made the required changes, click the "Cancel" button - if you are ready to have your listing re-reviewed by an editor, there is a checkbox to mark and the hit "Submit."

Latest Adobe Flex 3 SDK Release Notes

This document contains release notes and installation instructions for Adobe® Flex® 3 SDK. It is updated to reflect version 3.5.

About Flex 3 SDK

Flex 3 SDK includes the Flex framework (also known as the Flex class library), Flex command-line compilers, the Flex debugger, the ASDoc utility, and the debugger version of Flash Player. Use the Flex SDK to develop, compile, and deploy Flex applications that connect to XML and SOAP web services or connect to various server technologies such as PHP, ColdFusion, Java, and .NET using a server technology such as BlazeDS

What's new

This section lists some of the major new features and changes for Flex 3 SDK. See the Flex Developer Center for more information on new features.

Sandboxed and multi-version applications (new as of Flex 3.2) – Flex 3.2 added the ability for an application developer to divide functionality between multiple sub-applications and allow them to interoperate. Applications can be developed using different versions of Flex, and can optionally operate in an untrusted environment which allows applications to safely load code provided by third parties. Refer to the section below as well as the documentation for more details.
