Flex Accepted by Apache Software Foundation

In case you did not see the post on the Flex Team blog on Dec. 31st, it was announced that Flex has officially been accepted by the Apache Software Foundation. You can view the Apache Flex proposal on the Apache incubator wiki at http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/FlexProposal.

Apache Flex allows developers to target a variety of platforms, initially Apple iOS, Google Android, RIM BlackBerry, Microsoft Windows, and Mac OS X with a single codebase. Flex provides a compiler, skinnable user-interface components and managers to handle styling, skinning, layout, localization, animation, module-loading and user interaction management.

Just a bit of extra detail for you, all of which is available through Apache:

Flex source will be available at: http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/flex/ (note: it’s not there at the time of this writing)
Flex will have a public JIRA issue tracker (not available at the time of writing)

Joomla 2.5, New Features

Joomla 2.5 will have a host of new features including new search functionality, multi-database support, and update notification. Use the one-click upgrade within Joomla to move from 1.7 to 2.5. Most of the extensions that run on 1.7 should run on 2.5 as well.

New Search Function
New natural language search function with auto-completion and stemming (uses the root of the word entered to locate matches) is faster and more versatile.

Support for other Databases
Joomla has been rewritten so that different drivers can be written for different versions of SQL databases. Currently, drivers exist for MySQL and MS SQL.

Joomla Update Notification
On log in, see if Joomla is out of date and go to One-click update to Joomla.

Database Version Fix Button
Buttons to check if the database is up-to-date with any database schema changes added during upgrades and to fix if needed.

CAPTCHA in Core
The core comes with a plug-in to use reCAPTCHA. Sign up with reCAPTCHA and enter your keys to enable CAPTCHA on new user registrations.

Linking New Menus with a Module
If there is no module associated with the menu, there is a link shown in Menu Manager that will take the Joomla developer into a new module the Joomla Developer can create.

Use the ‘Images’ and ‘URL’ Fields to Create Simple Standardized Layouts
Use the existing ‘image’ and ‘URL’ fields in the articles to set up a simple standardized layout for blogs, news reports, etc. After activating the feature, specify an image for the introduction and an image for the full article, as well as three links.

Administrator Notification on New User Registration
Choose whether the administrator gets a new message when a user creates an account.

Menu Item Note
Add a note to menu items to, say, identify the menu item, clarify how it is used, or why it was set up the way it was.

Custom Text Filters
Text filtering has moved to ‘Global Configuration’. In Joomla 2.5, a joomla developer can create custom blacklists.

Filtering by Category
In Joomla 2.5, selecting a category in the article manager will include its subcategories, down to the depth the Joomla programmer can select. If the joomla programmer wants only the single category, the Joomla developers can select Level 1.

Manager for Language Overrides
Make these changes in the familiar backend of Joomla. Search for the text that the Joomla Developer can see and get a list of language keys and text to select. Change what is needed and save.

User Notes
Attach notes to assign dates to the users. These can be used for say, a date for reviewing the user or the last date the Joomla programmers reviewed a user. A Joomla developer can design so as to have multiple notes per user and the notes can be in different categories.

Status Display in Backend Enhanced
The footprint of the status displays (in English) has been reduced to prevent overcrowding.

Filter the Frontend Who's Online by User Group
The Joomla developers can optionally limit the display of online users on the website to those in the same user groups as the user.

Check for Native ZIP Support during the Installation
This will check during install if native ZIP is enabled on the host. Native ZIP is much faster than PHP to unzip, preventing timeouts when the Joomla Developers install large extensions or updates.

Syndicate Text Label More Flexible
Choose to not display text next to the syndicate icon or to use the default language pack text value.

Alternate Meta tags for multi-lingual sites
Search engines can see the meta tags and links for corresponding menu pages in other languages in the associated menu items.

Improving SEO: New system plug-in: languagecode
Allows search engines to see the language and country code they expect in cases where the Joomla language pack uses a different code.

Debug Plug-in Gets Formatting
Formats the different groups of data into sliders and color highlights database queries. This works in both the frontend and the backend.

New Features in Joomla! 2.5

Joomla 2.5, due out in January 2012, will have a host of new features including new search functionality, multi-database support, and update notification. The following article describes these features. Many people in the community have contributed to making these features possible, some of whom are listed here. Moving from 1.7 to 2.5 can be done with the one-click upgrade within Joomla and most extensions that run on 1.7 should also run on 2.5.

New Search Function

Based on Finder, which was developed by jXtended, Joomla 2.5 has added an exciting new natural language search function. This feature incorporated auto-completion and stemming. Stemming is the ability for the search to use the root of the word you entered to locate matches. While there is still work to be done, this search is also much better at searching in languages other than English.

This new search is faster and more versatile that the standard search. The data is indexed to get this flexibility and speed. New plugins are required to use this search. Joomla ships with the new core extension plugins, but other extension developers will need to create their own plugins to work with this new search. By default, the standard search is active and this new search is disabled. You can enable the plugin and index your files when the extensions you want to search have the new plugins.

Flex 4.6 SDK and Flash Builder

The Flex and Flash Builder teams are excited to announce the availability of Flex 4.6 SDK and Flash Builder 4.6 updates. Flash Builder 4.6 is a free update to Flash Builder 4.5 and provides expanded support for mobile application development and all the tools you need to take advantage of the new features in Adobe AIR 3.0 and Flash Player 11.

A lot is included in this update, so much so that we couldn’t deliver it in the Adobe Application Manager. This means Flash Builder 4.5 users won’t automatically be notified about the update and will have to download the full Flash Builder 4.6 installer and enter their Flash Builder 4.5 serial number.

You can download the full installer from Adobe.com. Please note: you must uninstall your previous version of Flash Builder 4.5 or 4.5.1 before installing 4.6. By default the Flash Builder uninstall program will preserve your preferences and workspace so you can easily reimport them into Flash Builder 4.6. If you require the standalone Flex 4.6 SDK, you can download the build from the Adobe opensource site.

Last Steps to Joomla 2.5!

Version 11.3 of the Platform has just been merged into the CMS and we are down to the last few weeks before 2.5!

We plan to release Version 2.5 beta on or before December 20th.

To make this schedule, we have until December 12th to propose and test new features.

1. Please test the present state of the CMS with your favorite extensions and report any bug on the Tracker.
TEST: The CMS can be downloaded from https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/downloads (Not for production sites!)

As many of you know, version 2.5 is the long-term-support release that ends the 1.6/1.7/2.5 series.
As such, the update to 2.5 will be seamless and will be handled exactly the same as the update from 1.6 to 1.7 or 1.7.2 to 1.7.3.

It is expected that all extensions should work without changes for version 2.5. However, extension developers should test their programs to make sure.

We hope to get some great new features into version 2.5, but we need the community to help with the process. Thanks!

What specifically is Adobe announcing in relation to Flex SDK?

As of November 2011, Adobe is in the process of preparing two proposals for incubating Flex SDK and BlazeDS at the Apache Software Foundation.

In addition to contributing the core Flex SDK (including automation and advanced data visualization components), Adobe also plans to donate the following:

Complete, but yet-to-be-released, Spark components, including ViewStack, Accordion, DateField, DateChooser and an enhanced DataGrid.
BlazeDS, the server-based Java remoting and web messaging technology that enables developers to easily connect to back-end distributed data and push data in real-time to Flex applications.
Falcon, the next-generation MXML and ActionScript compiler that is currently under development (this will be contributed when complete in 2012)

Joomla Day 2011 New York Recap

Thanks to the platinum sponsor Seblod, creator of a new CCK for Joomla!, we were able to host a dinner party on Friday night for 50 of our sponsors, speakers, volunteers, and international guests. The wonderful staff at House of Brews made our event quite memorable. It was exciting to have so much Joomla! talent in one room - core team, OSM board members, major component developers, hosting companies, and grateful end users mingled as the excitement level grew for the coming weekend events.

On Saturday, our generous benefactor Microsoft helped us invite all conference attendees to a party at the House of Brews. Seventy participants discussed the events of the day over beer, wings, and sliders.

After the planning and craziness is over, I can happily say that JoomlaDay2011 was a tremendous success.

Friday, the leadership team along with about 30 other attendees met to discuss where Joomla! should go in 2013. Unfortunately, I was unable to participate as I would have liked because I was setting up for the weekend. Regardless, I heard lots of great discussions occurred. It is exciting to see where Joomla! will be going to in just a few years!

Friday night we invited the sponsors, speakers, and volunteers to another party at the House of Brews. They really put on a great event! We had beer towers, appetizers, a great dinner, and, of course, dessert. They even presented a chance for me to mingle and meet with many of our international guests. What a way to start the weekend! The conversations ranged from politics, to Joomla!, and to current world events. I am proud to say we had guests from various countries including Western Australia, Israel, Columbia, Germany, France, Canada, and more.

Saturday morning started very early with a couple of headaches. Unfortunately, the coffee was not brewing as it should have been, but that did not slow down the presenters or workshops. Although, I must admit, people seemed a little fuzzy before they finally got their cup of Joe. With plenty of bagels, muffins, juice, and other accoutrement, the keynote began at 8:45. A special thanks to Ryan for creating a video for us that we were able to watch all together.

Each session on Saturday lasted for over an hour. We had sessions based on extensions and 3rd party developers, sessions based on what can be done with Joomla! from a developer perspective, and other sessions focused on the 'business end' of Joomla!. Each session was well attended, and there were definitely a variety of sessions to choose from. In fact, the number one complaint that I have received so far was that attendees had too many quality sessions to choose from. Well, we have a solution for that, too! We have posted the videos on the www.JoomladayNYC.com website for attendees to check out sessions they were unable to attend.

The pre-release version of Adobe Flash Builder4.6 has a new Flex SDK version 4.5.2 with integrated AIR3 and enables invoking important globalization features.

Flex is a highly productive, open source framework for building and maintaining expressive web applications that deploy consistently on all major browsers, desktops and operating systems. Adobe Flash and AIR are platforms to develop rich internet applications. Flash is used for browser based applications, AIR for native platform applications. Both have support for globalization features like locale aware formatting/parsing, collation, case transforms, localization and multi-lingual text rendering. However, text normalization, transliteration, Unicode character properties, encoding conversions, charset detections, Unicode string utilities etc., are not included.

Why We Need Globalization
Applications are accessed by users from different geographical areas. Globalization lets you create applications for all your customers in all the languages that you support. Your application can process data containing numeric values, dates, currencies, and times. You can format each of these types of data differently for different countries and regions. You can also develop applications in languages other than English.

Globalization is composed of Internationalization, or developing language-neutral application functionality that can recognize, process, and respond to data regardless of its representation. That is, whatever the application can do in one language, it can also do in another; and Localization, or taking shared, language-neutral functionality and applying to it a locale-specific interface.

Globalizing Flex Applications
Globalized Flex Applications avoid errors and confusion for your customers. This is evident in date formats. For example, a date in the form 1/2/2004 is interpreted as January 2, 2003 in the United States, but as February 1, 2004 in European countries. Currency formats are also important. Think of how your customers would feel if they found out the correct price for an item is 15,000 American dollars, not 15,000 Mexican pesos, which is equivalent to about 1600 American dollars.

Your website can also accept some form of text input such as customer feedback. You might want to support that feedback in multiple languages using a variety of character sets.

Using Flex SDK for Globalization
AIR and Flash can invoke, through ActionScript, the services of external dynamic libraries providing rich globalization support.

AIR applications can use globalization services provided by ICU. The AIR ICU extension is easy to build using the publicly available Adobe Flex SDK or using Flash Builder 4.6.

ICU
Open source ICU (International Components for Unicode) is a set of C/C++ and Java libraries providing Unicode and Globalization support for software applications. ICU is widely portable and gives applications the same results on all platforms and between C/C++ and Java software.

Here are a few highlights of the services provided by ICU

Code Page Conversion: Convert text data to or from Unicode and nearly any other character set or encoding. ICU's conversion tables are based on charset data collected by IBM over the course of many decades, and is the most complete available anywhere.
Collation: Compare strings according to the conventions and standards of a particular language, region or country. ICU's collation is based on the Unicode Collation Algorithm plus locale-specific comparison rules from the Common Locale Data Repository, a comprehensive source for this type of data.
Formatting: Format numbers, dates, times and currency amounts according the conventions of a chosen locale. This includes translating month and day names into the selected language, choosing appropriate abbreviations, ordering fields correctly, etc. This data also comes from the Common Locale Data Repository.
Time Calculations: Multiple types of calendars are provided beyond the traditional Gregorian calendar. A thorough set of time zone calculation APIs are provided.
Unicode Support: ICU closely tracks the Unicode standard, providing easy access to all of the many Unicode character properties, Unicode Normalization, Case Folding and other fundamental operations as specified by the Unicode Standard.
Regular Expression: ICU's regular expressions fully support Unicode while providing very competitive performance.
Bidi: support for handling text containing a mixture of left to right (English) and right to left (Arabic or Hebrew) data.
Text Boundaries: Locate the positions of words, sentences, paragraphs within a range of text, or identify locations that would be suitable for line wrapping when displaying the text.

As discussed early on in this article, the above features of ICU are in addition to the features provided by Flex / Flash Builder, such as locale aware formatting/ parsing, collation, case-transforms, localization and multi-lingual text rendering.

Well, day one of Adobe MAX 2011 has come; I write this from the break area of the show floor, where I’m sharing a table with several people whom I have never met. This, I think, is one of many things that makes MAX such an amazing experience: everyone comes to this massive convention center in downtown LA, knowing perhaps no one and perhaps a few others from his or her own company.

Now, only halfway through the first of three long days, people are mingling. They share tech-y jokes and participate in the same “bring your own device” labs, they sit with other strangers at lunch and wander in tandem across the massive showroom floor.

Adobe announces media publishers can now stream Flash-based video to iPhones and iPads

ZDNet UK reports that Adobe has finally released Flash Media Server 4.5, supporting Apple iOS. Broadcasters can now stream Flash-based video content in HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), an Apple-derived format.

Apple's iPhone and other mobile devices are well known for not supporting Flash, so in April Adobe said it had come up with a workaround.

Flash Media Server usually packages video streams using MPEG4 fragments, in the F4F file format. However, the new version adds support for a different protocol, HLS, which Apple created for QuickTime and iOS.

Check-Ins last for one hour
Users cannot check-in randomly to places. They can only check-in to nearby places to where they are. Just like in Facebook.
Once checked-in to a place users have access to all place-sections, except invitations. To invite other people, users have to be at the place (checked-in within an hour).
Place Owner, Admins, and Officers can invite people anytime!

Advanced ACL
You can have private Places, where a check-in must be approved by a place-administrator. Once a user check-in has been approved, future check-ins to this place by the same user do not need to be approved again.
You can also have secret Places! This places appear ONLY to users who were invited to them!
Users who were invited to a place, can immediate check-in! No admin-approval needed.

Difference between Place Name and Location Field:
Each Place (Google Maps Location) holds a "Location" field. Why is that? Here is the difference:
A Name identifies the place, eg. Mall's Shop.
A Location identifies the location of the place, eg. The Mall.
Understandably, a location like a mall, can hold many different shops inside, shops who are actually located on the same location, but have different names!
This is the most simple explanation that can be given to this, however this can be functional in many situations.

NOTE If you are using J!Places to add venues to SuperEvents, please keep in mind that the name of the place is NOT being taken into account! The "Location" field is being stored as the name of the venue. This is to maintain compatibility between the components.

NOTE Please notice that on desktop computers and laptops, Google may get your location wrong, because your ISP is transmitting wrong geolocation data. This is not the case on mobile devices (smartphones, iPhones, PDAs, etc.), where the geolocation is being transmitted correctly.

The Story Behind the Story of the 1.7 Release

Every Joomla! release has its moments of drama, tension, and transcendence. Inside the Joomla! Bug Squad in the run up to the release is always a flurry of intense activity. 1.7 was no different in that.

While most people probably know that the release of Joomla! 1.7 was a first because it was a time based released: back in January it was announced that the release of 1.7 would be in July, and the great thing is that we did it to the exact date and minute that was picked in late June. That doesn’t mean there were no hair raising moments though!

On the Saturday before release, Mark Dexter and Jean-Marie SImonet were going through their final punch list--4 days before release and it only had 4 items. One was a last minute security issue that had come in on Friday, and another was a decision about reverting a commit which had brought in an issue report, also at the last minute. So after hunting down and fixing the source of the security issue Mark made the revert and we, for the first time ever, had release packages for testing well in advance of a release. And the cool thing was that on the 17th Mark made a request for testing on the JBS mailing list. A request for testing packages 2 days in advance? Unheard of!

And then the tense, dramatic and transcendent happened.

At first, all was going great, but then Robert Vining posted about an issue … which I think he first learned about from Radek Suski. Really quickly, other people tried it and confirmed. In the meantime JBS dug in and found the source of the issue. And very quickly Mark was able to fix the problem.

As anyone involved in software development won’t be surprised to hear … it was due to a combination of the revert that was made on Saturday and a new feature in this case one that deletes unused core files.

Unfortunately when the old file was restored the list of files to delete wasn’t updated, but thanks to everyone on the JBS list it was fixed right away. And now we have another item for the pre-release check list.
And then Mark made new packages, posted and people tested again.

I’ve been through three “minor” releases and this was by far the smoothest, even with (maybe because of?) the deadline (not having 3 years worth of expectations helps too). Great job.

Even More In 1.7 Features

If you look at the 1.7 beta, which was released recently, you may want to know where to look for new features. In 1.7 most of the changes, even though technically features, are really enhancements of existing functions, making them work better for site users, site administrators and developers. I posted recently about some of them, but here are some more, some of which may not be immediately obvious.

Jacob Thrane Lund improved the mass mail function by allowing it to optionally exclude disabled users from mass mailing. This is really useful, and I can easily think of two reasons why it matters. First, none of us want to be accused of spamming people who have left our sites. Second, if you have suspended a user for some reason, you may not want to communicate some kinds of information with them. On the other hand, maybe you do. Either way it is helpful to have the option.

Jonathan Cameron contributed a nice code change that lets the core editor buttons (editor-xtd plugins) have meaningful tooltips. It’s so great to have many eyeballs noticing things like this and having people who discover them follow through with code improvements.

Rouven Weßling contributed another useful item by adding support for Open Search and another nice thing in bringing in PHP and HTML code highlighting support to the Code Mirror editor.

Amy Stephen contributed code to bring Viewing Access Level support to the back end component views for the first time, which means that back end users won’t be able to see content items in the back end that they aren’t allowed to see in the front end.

The loadmodule plugin was also changed to add some new features. Now you can add specific module chrome when you load a position (for example and you can load a module by module name and title instead of position (for example {loadmodule mod_login,Login Form,outline}). This was mine so thanks Mark and Andrew for accepting it and JBS for testing :). Now we will happily not have to use fake positions just to be able to load a single module.

There are a number of new features in 1.7 that are more or less invisble to users who aren’t developers, but that are going to make future releases much better for users. For example in one helpful change for developers, Vladimir Serotyukov contributed work to add more information to debugging outputs.

Joomla!Day Malaysia 2011 Recap

Some people might say my presentations are a bit "different". I just think I enjoy an "energized" presentation like everyone else, and I know when open source folks are asked to listen to a keynote at 9am on a Saturday, something more than coffee is needed to keep them awake. So I'm keen on doing my best to keep the audience happy with a bit of Californian banter and a little warm-up exercise at Joomla events. It's also a good remedy for lack of sleep.

I was a bit concerned, however, when I was preparing for Joomla!Day Malaysia 2011. Some folks told me that the Malaysian people are shy, reserved, and definitely not the kinds of people that would be interested in doing things a "differently" at a technology event.

These folks obviously haven't met the growing, energized, and excited Malaysian Joomla community that yelled "Joomla rocks!" on the 29th floor of the Petronas Towers in the heart of Kuala Lumpur on June 25, 2011.

More than 120 people packed the rooms of gorgeous conference room space graciously donated by Microsoft Malaysia, with striking views of the city and enough air conditioning to make us easily forget the steamy hot temperature outside.

The organizing team for Joomla!Day Malaysia 2011, lead by Meriza Anna Mustapha, Azrul Rahim, and Firdaus Adib, put on a wonderful showing. I was especially impressed to see their reduction on waste and effort to be a more "green" Joomla!Day by working with the Indian speakers (Parth Lawate, Saurabh Shah, and Ajay Lulia) to produce conference bags made from Indian newspapers!

With the release of Flash Builder 4.5, you can now develop Flex applications for Android, BlackBerry Tablet OS or iOS devices using the same workflow you use to build web or desktop applications today. In this quick tutorial, you’ll build an application that gets the latest trending topics from Twitter, and lets you see the tweets for each topic, as well as information on the user who posted each tweet. Along the way, you’ll see how to create and lay out a mobile Flex application, bind it to data using the data connectivity features in Flash Builder, and test your application on both the desktop and on a physical device

The mobile development features in Flex and Flash Builder 4.5 provide several key features:

Many of the core Flex components have been made mobile-ready, so when you use them in a mobile application, they automatically appear with skins and interactions optimized for small screens and touch input.
Unlike web or desktop applications, mobile applications are typically structured around a series of simple views, as shown in the diagram above. Flex 4.5 provides View and ViewNavigator components to make it easy to build these types of applications.
Flex provides mechanisms to make it easier for your application to adapt across screens with different pixel densities—a common problem in mobile development.
The core Flex components have been optimized in order to perform well on devices with limited memory and CPU speed.
Mobile applications built with Flex 4.5 use the AIR runtime, and are packaged using the native application format on each device, so they can be deployed and sold on application stores or markets the same way as native applications on each platform.

Government of Greece Uses Joomla

Faster Flex Compilation with Flash Builder 4.5

The Flex 4.5 SDK compiler is slightly faster and more conservative about memory compared to its previous version. There are a couple of small changes that a developer can make to speed up compilation. One of them involves a new compiler option and others are related to organizing code in your project and can be leveraged by customers on the 4.0 SDK as well.

The New Compress Option (non-mobile projects only)

SWF files can be compressed or uncompressed. SDK 4.5 exposes a compiler option to control whether the output SWF is compressed or uncompressed. Try setting -compress=false in Project properties -> Flex Compiler -> Additional Compiler arguments.

Before you go ahead and set this, note the caveats:

Flash Builder automatically sets this option for Mobile projects (and removes it on an Export Release build).
If you set the option, you'll have to remove the option before exporting a release build unless you are fine with 2x - 10x increase in SWF size.
Strangely, we found Flex runtime performance implications when an uncompressed SWF was generated. This requires more investigation, but it is something that must be kept in the back of your mind and the reason why this is not the default behavior.

The numbers: 2239ms before and 1734ms after (On a large customer project when making an incremental change of width in MXML). That is roughly 22%, but your mileage will vary depending upon the actual contents of your project. Normal projects are unlikely to give this drastic an improvement in compilation speed.

New Features for Version 1.7

Now that version 1.6.3 is released, the development focus for Joomla can shift gears and we can focus on new features for version 1.7. This is a very exciting time for the project, and the Production Leadership Team (PLT) thought it would be helpful to outline our ideas about the process for adding new features.

First a couple of caveats. As you may know, we have just switched to a time-based release cycle. So version 1.7 will be our first version that is released at a specific point in time – July 10, 2011 – instead of when a given set of features is complete. So we know when version 1.7 will release, but we don't know what new features it will contain. Because this is our first cycle of this type, we will be figuring some stuff out as we go along. We have the general outline of the process, as will be explained here, but there will no doubt be things that we need to adjust or change.

A second wrinkle is that, on or about 30 April 2011, we will split off the Joomla Platform (the libraries folder more or less) as a separate project. This will change the way in which we fix bugs and add features that affect the platform. Again, this is all new, so again we will be learning as we go along.

Open Source Matters (OSM) is pleased to announce the April 2011 call for board member nominees.

OSM is entrusted with providing organizational, legal, and financial support for the Joomla! project. You can find out more about the organization at http://opensourcematters.org. In November 2010, OSM decided to create guidelines for nominating new board members and published those guidelines here. One of the decisions made was to hold nominations, if needed, every April and October.

Today marks the start of the April 2011 nomination period and we are looking for your nominations for a new OSM board member. Separately, we are also looking for a person to serve in an important non-board member role as well.

We acknowledge that the greater worldwide Joomla! community can help us a great deal in this election process, and make us aware of potential qualified candidates.

Adobe Supports Microsoft IE 9 Launch at SxSW

With today’s launch of Internet Explorer 9, the Adobe Flash Player team is excited to highlight the results of our collaboration around both hardware acceleration and end-user privacy. Both companies believe that the best experience with the web is achieved when browsers and web runtimes like Flash Player are tightly integrated to ensure that the web browsing experience is seamless and highly interactive.

As part of the South by Southwest conference, we shared a demo that highlights the work we’ve done together in terms of hardware acceleration. In this case, 3D content in Flash directly participates in Internet Explorer’s hardware rendering pipeline, as exposed through the ISurfacePresenter API. For web developers, this means that hardware accelerated features in Flash, such as stage video and 3D graphics, will directly leverage the power of the GPU in the presentation process. This translates to a more responsive and efficient web browsing experience.

Joomla Day India a great success !

Joomla Day India 2011 saw people from All over India & in fact even some from UK grace the event. With over 180 people coming to attend some really cool Joomla sessions spread over 2 days, this was India's Biggest Joomla Day till now.

The best part was that people came from all corners of India making it a true Joomla Day "India". The event schedule catered to people from all types of backrounds - from beginners to Joomla end users to developers. The sessions were spread over 2 Days with Brian taking a total of 4 talks !

Adding a truely international flavour to the event were speakers like Brian Teeman, Klas Berlic (Molajo) & Azrul from the JomSocial team who all came all the way to India. They were well complemented by several Indian speakers like Parth Lawate, Ashwin Date From Techjoomla & Tekdi Web Solutions, Irfan, Saurabh Shah from Cloud Access, Ajay Lulia from Synergy, Aditee Rele & Aviraj from Microsoft, Vineet from Viprasoft & Shyam from Ready Bytes who all added an Indian flavour & context to the sessions..

Day 1 started off with a hearty breakfast in the Level 9 canteen. The first session saw Brian getting the audience on their feet & rocking the entire MCCIA Building with "I Say Joomla you Say Rocks" & an Indian version of the same "Joomla Ki Jay !". Brian took the audience through a great presentation on "Why Joomla". It was a fresh perspective especially to people deep into Joomla !

This was followed by "Deploying PHP / Joomla Applications on IIS and IIS Extentions for PHP/Joomla" by Aviraj Ajgekar( MicroSoft) after which "Shyam Verma (ReadyBytes) told the developer audience about Joomla Code Quality Control by Automation Tools. Next up Ajay Lulia from Synergy took the stage to tell the crowd about nuances in Joomla Security. The post lunch sessions saw Ashwin Date from Techjoomla announce the GPL release the Joomla REST API & take us through its cpabilities. Next Brian took the stage again for the much awaited "Watch Brian make a Joomla Site in 45 mins"

This was followed by "Indian Web Standards and Technical approach" by Vineet Khurana. Post Tea Saurabh Shah from Cloud access did a Comparison of Joomla Template Frame works & the day was wrapped up with Aditee Rele taking the stage to tell us about Joomla with Webmatrix.

Day 2 was all about Joomla 1.6, Molajo, Social Networks, Community & Prizes ! Brian started off with a cool presentaiton on 1.6 which ended up showing us a lot of secrets. Next Klas Berlic set the stage on fire showing off Molajo & the cool stuff it brings to Joomla. This was followed by Irfan telling telling the audience about common issues & mistakes one can make in working with Joomla. Parth Lawate came up next to tell the Audience about Joomlart's T3 framework.

Need for Joomla to support Multiple Databases?

When more and more users started using Joomla, it evolved as a Powerful CMS framework. The limitation of installing Joomla only on MySQL started to show up as a serious limitation.

Primary reasons to not adopt Joomla CMS. They are

1. The companies do not have IT support staff proficient in MySQL. Not that Joomla requires complex maintainence all the time, just that companies from the IT standpoint need to plan for handling worst case scenarios.

2. All of the internal IT applications are built on databases other than MySQL such as SQLServer/Oracle/PostgresSQL with the exception of the website.

3. As the company grows, the IT group would like to be proficient in the software it is built upon to be able to support it effectively and efficiently. Therefore, porting the website to a SQLServer/Oracle/PostgresSQL platform would be a step in the right direction, adding IT support, saving time, saving licensing/support costs and integrating the website with the existing internal IT systems.

To add a new dimension to this award winning CMS package, we started work on porting Joomla on Oracle first. Oracle is one of the complex database with substantial amount of non standards (lack of support for ANSI SQL) in my opinion. We successfully ported Joomla 1.5 to Oracle.

Next logical step was to support Joomla 1.6 function on multi database including Oracle, SQLServer and PostgresSQL.

An obvious question when designing system to support multiple database is "Why not an ORM?".
Object-relational mapping (ORM, O/RM, and O/R mapping) in computer software is a programming technique for converting data between incompatible type systems in object-oriented programming languages. This creates, in effect, a "virtual object database" that can be used from within the programming language. There are both free and commercial packages available that perform object-relational mapping, although some programmers opt to create their own ORM tools.

During the initial stage of this project, we could have used ORM tools or extend the home grown ORM layer within Joomla.

Though the usage of ORM third party tools could have enabled various users to quickly add a non-MySQL database for Joomla, it would require for programming and the need for more qualified technical resources every time this had to be done. Also not all ORM tools are open sourced. Hence it would involve purchase of these tools, which would defeat the purpose of having to select Joomla in the first place.

Hence a more feasible solution was to extend the home grown ORM layer. Though this process is still being debated upon, we weighed the advantages and disadvantages of going each way and decided upon making the changes to Database (DB) framework in Joomla.

Seven Thousand Listings and Counting

In October 2010 I had the privledge of writing a blog post about the JED reaching 6000 listings. Little did I know that 4 1/2 months later I would be writing a "7000 listings" post. The Joomla! Extensions Directory (JED) reached 7000 published listings this week.

Not only are there now 7000 ways to extend Joomla, but those 7000 are very popular. In October we also announced that there were over 138 million downloads of these extensions. Now, there have been over 177 million which shows phenomenal growth in a very short period of time.

Another milestone was reached with over 100,000 votes and reviews for listings on the JED.

During this same time period, the main Joomla.org site was awarded a PageRank of 10, making it one of the 'most important' sites in the world according to Google's ranking. That's not suprising in light of W3Schools stating that Joomla! powers more than 2.7% of the entire web during this same period!

About Adobe AIR and Flash Player Incubator

Adobe introduced a new program called “Adobe AIR and Flash Player Incubator”. This happened at the same time as the launch of the “Molehill” 3D APIs for AIR and Flash Player public preview. And I think “Molehill” stole the thunder and not many of you paid attention to the announcement of the incubator program.

In short, this program offers a technology preview of the Flash Player and Adobe AIR runtimes. Anyone can access this program; there is no need to apply and wait to get accepted – this differs from how the prerelease programs are run.
It also means that if you get involved you can:

test your applications early against these bleeding-edge capabilities to see if they break or perform well
you can give us feedback, so together we can create better runtimes
you can try out and play with the new APIs well ahead of the public release, so you are prepared to use them live in your applications right from day one

There is one thing I want to add to this: keep in mind that not all the features are guaranteed to make it into the final bits. However, now, more than ever, you can work with us to shape the future runtimes in terms of capabilities, APIs, and features.

Joomla! Information soon in Many Languages!

Most people are aware that Joomla is an international community and consists of much more than the English-only Joomla.org family of sites. Many non-English countries have their own language-specific resources such as localized websites, documentation and forums. So how do we bring internationalization to the main Joomla.org sites?

How can non-English community members find local Joomla resources?
Currently, by using a (local) search engine.

How does the current Joomla.org family of sites engage international non-English community members?
The only current option for the main information on the Joomla.org family of sites is to utilize an online translation tool such as Google Translate. However, there are language-specific forums on forum.joomla.org

Possible Improvement - Local Language Information Pages
In June of 2010 I participated in the JoomStew radio show along with fellow guests Sander Potjer and Radek Suski titled “Measuring Community”, a discussion around a chapter in Jono Bacon’s book, The Art of Community.

During this interesting show, I was able to discuss localization with Sander. Sander is very active in the Dutch community (joomlacommunity.eu) and pointed out that the connection between the joomla.org sites and the local non-English community sites needs improvement. When I asked what he thought would be a way to accomplish that, he referred me to another international website that displays a small notice based on the language detected in your browser settings pointing you to information in your own language.

The Joomla.org sites have always been unintentionally English-centric. To increase discovery of the many non-English Joomla communities, we started an initiative to compile international information pages which would provide a gateway to these local communities and some translated “About Joomla” information. To accomplish that we compiled a short English page with the most important resources and put it on the docs.joomla.org website. After a call for volunteers to start developing these pages, the response was amazing - the main document has already been translated to nearly 30 different languages/countries! Thanks to everyone who contributed so far!

For the next phase, it’s now time to make the international pages available on the Joomla.org site. We hope to have more information on this phase soon.

Joomla Night Stockholm: World Wildlife Foundation Uses Joomla

In Sweden we have http://www.minplanet.se. Minplanet is an initiative of Världsnaturfonden WWF, the Swedish part of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and encourages the Swedish people to become even more environmentally conscious.
In 2009 the website won a prize as #44 of the top 100 sites in Sweden in a yearly competition arranged by Internetworld (IDG). Click here to read more.

The website which has 20,000 members is built with extensions for community, blog, forum, events and more. In addition, some major custom extensions have been developed by the Pixpro team in Stockholm, such as the Green promise (Miljölöftet).

”This was launched in the fall 2009, and since, one of the swedish counties runs a competitition to see which cities have saved the greatest amount of carbon emissions. They can follow their results in realtime on Minplanet, ” says Elin, editor in chief at Minplanet

One of the custom components was for Google Maps. itshows the dots of the people that took "Green promises" (vowed to save a certain amount of energy...for example "only use public transport" and so on).

There's a list of over 100 different "Green promises" that people can choose from and add to their profile. Our component then automatically calculates the amount of saved carbon dioxide and puts it into their user profile which is then displayed on the google map.

The Adobe ActionScript 3 SDK for the Facebook Platform provides an ideal solution for building rich, social experiences on the web. Recently this library was updated to include new capabilities and bug fixes. Using this open source library, developers can quickly build Flash and AIR apps across devices and screens. Alan Greenblatt, a Flex partner solution architect at Adobe, recorded a video tutorial demonstrating how to take advantage of this library.
Adobe evangelist Lee Brimelow recorded a video demonstration that shows how to build and publish an application to the Android market in under seven minutes.
Ryan Stewart recorded a session on Adobe TV titled "Debug Adobe AIR for Android Applications." For developers looking to understand the basic developer workflow for troubleshooting issues in their apps using Flash Builder, Ryan’s recording provides a valuable overview.

Are JUGs worth it?

Several Joomla User Groups (JUG) have reports of around a hundred people attending, joomladays might have 3-400 people attend. So why in some cases do JUGs only have 4 or 5 attend their meetings and 100 at a national event?

How do you make a JUG successful, is it food? beer? or dancing penguins and a late night disco?

Several JUGs have on an average membership of 40 people, but few ever turn up. Here is an example of trying to get one JUG off the ground. (this is not a JUG I have attended!)

The first meeting was highly publicised across Joomla and twitter. It attracted loads of responses, the room was booked, about 12 people turned up. Apparently they enjoyed themselves and were looking forward to the next event.

At the next event around 20 people turned up. All Joomla users again, but only 8 were of the ones that turned up the time before.

Due to circumstances, the next meeting was 3 months later, but this time with star billing of some serious professional Joomla people.

Despite the assurances and confirmations of around 20 people, only 7 turned up. Yes for those that turned up, it was enjoyable, informative and new connections were made. But is there a point in the next meeting?

From the highest point in the tallest building in Santiago, Chile, Joomla!Day Chile provided South America's Spanish-speaking community the first Joomla!Day of it's kind on January 18, 2011. With sweeping views of Santiago and the great Andes mountains, Joomla users, developers, and designers from across Chile participated in one of the largest Joomla!Days I've ever attended. Guest speakers arrived from across the country, the United Kingdom, Spain, and the US to share in this special occassion.

Nearly 500 attendees packed the auditorium at Telefonica Chile in downtown Santiago during a beautiful summer's day. While the main auditorium hosted the morning's events, the afternoon's sessions took place at the top of the skyscraper, with gorgeous views of Santiago while soaking in the Joomla love.

Best yet, this was the first Joomla!Day ever to showcase the distribution of diplomas to the students of Universidad de Chile, whom successfully completed 160 hours of coursework to receive their certificates. It would be great to see other universities around the world follow in the footsteps of the Universidad de Chile, and I hope that future Joomla!Days can highlight the success of students around the world studying our community's software.

After the event, I had a chance to spend time with two of my Joomla friends, Javier Gomez from the OSM Board of Directors and Brian Teeman. On the day after the event, we met with the good folks at TVN, one of Chile's most popular television networks, where we learned how they're using Joomla inside their network. Additionally, we had a chance to stop by the Microsoft Chile office to chat about ways our teams can work together to help university students in Chile learn to use Joomla as a development platform.

Adobe releases Flash Builder 4 update, and Flex 4.1

Just a little over 3 months after the release of Flash Builder 4.0, Adobe has released the first update to it’s IDE Flash Builder 4.0.1.

The latest updates bring with it the latest Flex 4.1 SDK, the open source compiler and SDK which can be used even without the Flash Builder IDE to compile Flash applications. Flex 4.1 brings one major new feature: layout mirroring. With layout mirroring Adobe aims to make it simpler to adapt applications built for a left-to-right locale for use with right-to-left locales.

Since Flash Builder 4 and Flex 4.0 were released before the release of Flash Player 10.1 and AIR 2.0, Flex 4.1 is their first stable release to support the new features provided by there runtimes.

More interesting are their plans for a future release of the Flex SDK code-named “Hero”. The goals for the Hero release are juicy indeed.

First of all, Hero will be based on a version of Flash Player and AIR that has yet to be released, as such Adobe will be a little quiet in releasing updates, releasing only those parts which are independent of the new features to come in those releases.

Earlier Adobe had decided to create a new lighter SDK code-named Slider for creating content targeting mobiles, however with the increasing power of mobile devices, and with sufficient performance thanks to optimizations, Adobe believes that the same SDK could used, with touch-optimized, mobile-centric skins built for the highly skinnable Spark architecture.

Adobe will continue to evolve Flex 4’s new Spark architecture in an effort to bring it to parity with the feature-set of Flex 3’s Halo. The “Hero” build of Flex will bring a Spark Form, Spark DataGrid and Spark Image, three of missing components in the new architecture.

Hero will also be better optimized in terms of compiling performance, memory consumption, load time etc for large scale applications which are spread over multiple modules with multiple skins.

Also it seems future versions of Flex will be more coupled with Flash Player releases. Currently there is lack of synchronization between releases of the runtimes and the SDK, with Flash Player 10.1 support coming in this update. Whatever versions lie ahead for the Flash Player and AIR, the next Flex SDK will support them at the get-go.

The Path Forward: Migration and the Future

So we're now about one week into the stable cycle for Joomla! 1.6 and it seems that the biggest question that is on people's minds is upgrading/migration. There is a great deal of interest from people who want to keep their existing sites, but who also want to try out the latest and greatest features that Joomla! 1.6 has to offer.
When the Production Leadership Team met in San Francisco last September, the release of Joomla! 1.6 was one of the big topics we had to grapple with. We had made good progress already, but there was still a good amount of work to be done.

Given the situation we found ourselves in, together with the fact that there was already a community member (Matias Aguirre) who was working on a migration tool, we decided that it was better to support the effort already in progress than to spend time duplicating what was already in progress.

So, the bottom line is this:

Migration to Joomla! 1.6 - We recommend people interested in migrating to use Matias Aguirre's jUpgrade extension. Testing and feedback from the community will play an important role in perfecting this extension.
Migration to the July 2011 release - We are planning to implement a site importer in this release that will allow you to import your data from either Joomla! 1.5 or Joomla! 1.6.
As per the Development Strategy, we intend to manage change much more carefully moving forward. This, combined with our shortened release cycle means that upgrades and migrations will go a lot smoother.
Joomla! 1.5 is a Long Term Support (LTS) release. This means that it will be supported for approximately 15 more months. That makes the estimated date for End of Life of Joomla! 1.5 to be April 11, 2012.
The next LTS release will take place in January of 2012.

Joomla! 1.6 not only marks the introduction of major features that people have been waiting for (granular access control, unlimited category depth), but also the shift to a new development strategy that will enable us to release continual updates on a regular basis while making the upgrade process as painless as possible.

Joomla! 1.6 arrives

It is with great pleasure and pride that the Joomla Production Leadership Team (PLT) announces the release of Joomla!® 1.6. Our community has been anticipating this milestone for many months. As we celebrate the arrival of the new version, we wish to recognize the many people who have made this day possible.
The PLT would like to thank everyone who contributed time, code and patches to make 1.6 happen. We covered the full spectrum of emotion while taking the 1,000-plus day journey, but in the end, all the hard work and commitment has paid off. With heartfelt appreciation, we would like to thank the following people for their efforts:

It is impossible to name each contributor without whom 1.6 would not exist. So many individuals have given freely and selflessly to an amazing project for the benefit of its community of users, administrators, developers and designers.
Thanks also goes to those who contributed to the development of the help screens for Joomla 1.6: We thank the hundreds of people who made changes or additions to the documentation wiki during the 1.6 release cycle.

This module shows a list of (ordered/related/upcoming) articles with title, id,introtext, image (thumb), author, category, hits, rating, comments, facebook and twitter share buttons... It can be used with standard Joomla's content, but some options will only be available with FLEXIcontent.

The module automatically detects if FLEXIcontent has been installed on the site and shows you different parameters accordingly, so you can use it on "normal" Joomla sites too without any problem.

Creating a Group of Advisors

Open Source Matters (OSM), is the non-profit organization that provides the Joomla project with financial and legal support.

It's a serious responsibility and one that is currently held by 14 board members who have long and successful track records as participants in the Joomla community.
We are always looking to improve and follow best practices for organizations like OSM. We recognize that the board would benefit from a widened scope of experience with other Open Source and non-profit projects.

To this end, we’re planning to create a group of advisors. The aim of this group is to provide:

Advice based on their experience and success in the Open Source and business world.
Connections to people who can help the Joomla project.
A fresh, outsider's view on Joomla and its challenges.

However, we do want to make sure that the group is set up correctly. To that end, we approached two people with substantial experience at the highest levels of the Open Source world: Allen Gunn from Asipration Tech and Dan Lopez from the Linux Foundation. We have asked them, together with OSM, the Joomla leadership and the Joomla community to help create and define the structure for the group so that future members can be successfully brought on board.

Nothing is set in stone regarding this group, from the name to the members to the structure. Over the next few weeks, look for ways in which you can talk with the advisors, help form the group's structure and benefit from their advice.

Latest Tour de Flex Updates

Both the web and desktop versions of Tour de Flex were recently updated to include AIR 2 samples. If you are not familiar with Tour de Flex, it is an extremely valuable resource for learning about Adobe platform technologies including Flex, Flash and Adobe AIR.

The new AIR 2 examples include:

Global error handler
Gestures
Microphone
Open with default application
Native Process
Socket API

For additional information on these examples, see Holly Schinsky’s blog post. Also, Greg Wilson informs me that more examples are coming soon. If there are specific examples you would like to see, please leave us a comment and we will relay your requests back to the Tour de Flex team.

Christian Cantrell, a member of the AIR team, also created an extremely valuable blog post that provides links to a number of articles, videos, blog posts and samples related to AIR 2.

Flex 4 Latest Updastes For TLF2.0

TLF 2.0 is not a drop-in replacement into Flex 4. To even get it running changes are needed to Flex 4.0.T wo files need to be replaced in Flex 4 and spark.swc needs to be rebuilt. The files, FTETextField.as and CSSTextLayoutFormat.as, are available for download here.

These changes were tested with Flex 4.0 SDK build 14159. I believe the same changes will work with Flex 4.1.
To rebuild Flex with these changes:
1) From http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/display/flexsdk/Download+Flex+4 download the “Open Source Flex SDK” you wish to modify.
2) replace the two files with the above modified versions.
3) run “ant -q main” in the frameworks directory
4) replace spark.swc with the one you just built.

There are other known issues. The biggest one is that TLF changed selection to permit inclusion of the final paragraph terminator in the selection from the selectAll API. This gives more consistent highlighting but caused some problems for Flex code. Fixes for this issue are not available for 4.0/4.1.

UPDATE For Flex 4.1
The changes for Flex 4.1 are to the same two files but the source files have changed in the Flex SDK. I posted 4.1 versions here: http://blogs.adobe.com/tlf/files/2010/08/FlexFixes41.zip

I’ve also seen the problem with building datavisualization. I solved by copying manifest_datavisualization.xml to manifest.xml in the frameworks/projects/datavisualization directory.
